WE ARE SILVER!

We are thrilled to share with our students, families, staff, friends and wider community that we have achieved Silver: Rights Aware, of the UNICEF Rights Respecting Schools Award.

UNICEF is the world’s leading organisation working for children and their rights. The Rights Respecting Schools Award is granted to schools that show commitment to promoting and realising children’s rights and encouraging adults, children and young people to respect the rights of others in school. Achieving Silver is recognition that Bow School has shown good progress towards embedding children’s rights in the school’s policy, practice and ethos. Having attained Silver means that:

• Bow school is explicitly embedding the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child in its policy, practice and culture.
• Bow School promotes knowledge and understanding of the Convention throughout your school community.
• We have put into action and developed the plans outlined in our Action Plan for Silver, which we submitted to achieve Bronze: Rights Committed.
• We are beginning to see the positive impact of these actions on children and young people, staff, and on the school’s ethos, practice and environment.
• Children and young people are beginning to see themselves as rights respecting global citizens and advocates for fairness and children’s rights, both locally and globally.

In June, a UNICEF Assessor visited Bow School and praised the excellent work integrated rights across the curriculum, students’ knowledge and confidence of these rights, how our carefully planned enrichment activities impact positively on student confidence, and much more. The Assessor recognised evidence of proactive engagement, that our Anti-Bullying Ambassador programme having some impact and supporting confidence and that our students are able to communicate their ambitions, aspirations and how this helps them to take responsibility for their learning.

Following on from the receipt of the Silver Award, Year 10 students wrote to Game Changers and was awarded a £400 grant to produce a professional video, to promote and showcase the Rights of the Child.

We look forward to continuing to embed the Rights of a Child into every strand of school life and working together to achieve Gold: Rights Achieved.
