BTEC Sport Science Extended Diploma

Studying Sport Science at Bow Sixth Form

Entry Requirements: In order to study this course you need to obtain 5 GCSE’s at grade 4 and above including L2 BTEC Sport (Merit)/GCSE PE, Maths, Science and English Language.

Why study this course?

The BTEC Sport Science course is aimed at students who have an interest in sport and wish to pursue a career within the sport and exercise science sector. This course is for students who wish to continue their education through applied learning, involving a range of theory and practical based teaching. This qualification is wide-ranging in content and is equivalent to three A-levels, preparing students for work within the sports industry or for university.

What will I learn?

You will study seven mandatory content areas:

  • Functional Anatomy
  • Sport and Exercise Physiology
  • Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology
  • Nutrition for Sport and Exercise Performance
  • Coaching for Performance and Fitness
  • Field and Laboratory-based Fitness Testing
  • Applied Research Methods in Sport and Exercise Science

To make up the 13 units you will also study:

  • Physical Activity for Individual and Group-based Exercise
  • Sociocultural Issues in Sport and Exercise
  • Specialised Fitness Training
  • Sports Injury and Assessment
  • Sports Massage
  • Technology in Sport and Exercise Science. 

 Assessment

The course is assessed through a variety of methods aiming to cater to a broad range of students’ learning styles and needs.

  • 2 x 1 ½ hour written exams
  •  1 x 1 ½ hour controlled assessment
  • All other units will be assessed through coursework.
